Google’s AI venture Boston Dynamics has released a recent video documenting its human alike creation Atlas robots. This invention is shaking the robotics industry as the performance of these robots is much better than any previous generation of robots. This robot can walk or run on an uneven terrain and also has fantastic balance. Observing the fantastic result, Georgia Tech robotics professor Aaron Ames commented “They’ve set a new bar; it’s a huge step towards getting robots that can actually operate in our world in unstructured environments on uneven terrain.” It’s true that previous version of robots was also able to walk and run, however those robots weren’t able to navigate on an uneven terrain.
Robotics experts expressed high satisfaction over the work of the Google Atlas robot. They stated that the new version of Atlas is a building block towards robots those prepare our meal; fold our laundry and care for the elderly. Roboticist Chris Atkeson stated “That robot is out of the lab, outdoors, with no wires. It slips, but doesn’t fall down; we’re turning a corner in making robots better. The great unknown is when are we going to build hands and robot skin that is useful?”
This version of robot has the ability to walk and run like human. This robot is around 5 fit 9 inch tall and weighs around 180 pounds. This robot can organize books, boxes, shelves and can open doors. This robot can also get back up very quickly after being knocked down.
In the video of Boston Dynamics, an employee was seen playing roughly with the robot atlas. Although previous version of robots was also capable of walking and running, they were tied up with wires to secure them from falling. The New Atlas is amazing in performing its task. Jerry Pratt, a senior research and scientist from the institute for Human & Machine Cognition commented “Robots are going to fall, there’s no doubt about it, but operators in the competition had to be overly cautious because it cost much when the robot falls.”
Scientists are looking forward for the next generation creation of the robots with hands and skins. If the next generation robots are properly constructed with hands and skin then they would be able to feel their surroundings. In that case, next generation robots will be able to chop vegetables, squeeze through tight spaces and work in a nuclear plant. That will be a whole new era.
